Pinetop Perkins - Blues musician
Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins (July 7, 1913 - March 21, 2011) was an American blues pianist known for his influential contributions to the blues and rock-and-roll genres. His remarkable career spanned eight decades and earned him numerous honors, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and induction into the Blues Hall of Fame. Born in Belzoni, Mississippi, he grew up on the Honey Island plantation, where he developed his musical talents from a young age.
Pinetop Perkins' musical journey began in his teens when he started playing the guitar and piano, learning the basics from a piano tuner and by listening to the sounds around him. His passion for music led him to become a prominent figure in the blues scene, collaborating with some of the most iconic performers of his time. Notably, he toured with Ike Turner in the 1950s and later with Muddy Waters, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
In 2004, Pinetop Perkins moved to Austin, Texas, where he continued to share his musical talents and became an integral part of the local music community. His presence in Austin further solidified his legacy as one of the last old-school bluesmen, and he continued to inspire and influence fellow musicians until his passing in 2011.
